The Abrahamsen FS401 speaker is a result of innovative engineering and design. This is the first in a new range of loudspeakers designed to be compatible with the V series of amplifiers and other high quality audio equipment. The FS401 uses 5 drive units from the highly respected manufacturer SEAS. The units are used in a 2 ½ way bass reflex design. The tweeter has been specifically designed to maintain constant directivity over its frequency range; thus providing a wide, even listening area up to ±30° from the tweeter axis. This is achieved using a DXT lens. The bass/mid-range units are arranges in a D’appolito configuration above and below the tweeter. 2 further bass units are placed below the bass mid-range units. The woven polypropylene bass/midrange units provide low coloration at high frequencies due to well damped cone modes of vibration, This driver uses Seas SpiderRing® technology; simple crossover filters are sufficient to marry the responses of these units to the tweeter. The bass reflex port is integrated into the base of the cabinet providing strong coupling to the listening room at the floor. The reflex port bass amplification can be reduced by the foam plug supplied with the loudspeaker. The cabinets are manufactured from an aluminum extrusion and MDF; this provides a stiff, well damped base for the drive units. The engineers at SEAS have been closely involved in the product development of the complete product.

Structurally the FS401 cabinet consist of an extruded aluminium profile with a semi-elliptic shape. The curvature of the cabinet makes it far stiffer than a conventional fibreboard cabinet. The material properties of aluminium make it easy to dampen vibrations when combined with bitumen absorbents. Inside the extrusion, six horizontal ribs reinforce the structure. These ribs are placed at unequal distances to each other in order to prevent standing waves inside the cabinet. The ribs also support each drive unit and distribute the forces and vibrations from the baffle to the back of the cabinet. This results in a rigid front baffle with little acoustic coloration. The crossover has a simplistic 1st order design of high quality components. It is placed in the speaker’s base, separated from the acoustic chamber thus reducing vibrations in the crossover components. The internal wiring in the speakers is made according to Abrahamsen standards with single strand copper wire in twisted pairs to reduce inductance. The product has a hand polished, high gloss grand piano finish matched with a matte coating of the aluminium extrusion. The bass reflex port is integrated in the base of the cabinet as well as the custom engineered terminal at the back. The terminal consists of two solid copper rods directly connecting the speaker cable to the crossover unit. This Direct Signal Connector (DSC) is based on the Abrahamsen d’Vise connector design.
